The delays that resulted from efforts to please the OWI likely interfered with the success of the film. In January 1944, when Ryskind wrote the first script, the tide of the war had only begun to turn toward the Allies, but when the film went into production in September 1944, the Germans had already surrendered Paris.96 By the time the film was released on 23 May 1945, the Allies had declared victory in Europe. Even so, reviews were mostly positive. Critics praised the film’s imagination, with Alton Cook of the New York World Telegram calling the picture “a gem of a fantasy,” and “T.M.P.” of the New York Times observing that the film was “as far removed from any semblance to reality as the most ardent escapist could wish, and a bit of an innovation as screen musicals go.”97 They also praised the close connection between music and drama.98 Still, despite the reviews, the film came and went without much comment in the wider world, probably because it was no longer relevant by May 1945.
